WHAT IS UL-142?
UL-142 is the standard for steel aboveground tanks used to store flammable and combustible liquids. It covers design, construction, and testing requirements for single-wall, double-wall, and compartmented tanks.
KEY AREAS COVERED UNDER UL-142
1. Material Requirements
Shell plates must meet ASTM A36 or equivalent specifications. Minimum thickness is determined by tank capacity and geometry.
2. Welding Standards
All welds must follow AWS D1.1. A qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) must be on file before fabrication begins.
3. Leakage Testing
Every tank must pass a pneumatic test at minimum 3 PSI held for 60 minutes. Full soap bubble coverage of all weld seams is required.
4. Venting
Normal and emergency vents must be correctly sized per UL-142 tables.
5. Nameplate & Marking
Every compliant tank must carry a permanent nameplate with manufacturer details, capacity, material spec, and standard reference.
WHY DOCUMENTATION MATTERS
Physical compliance alone is not enough. Auditors require complete supporting documentation including WPS, PQR, WPQ logs, test certificates, and inspection sign-offs.
